Background of the study
Illegal refinery explosions in Okrika Local Government Area have resulted in catastrophic loss of life and complex injury patterns that challenge conventional forensic investigations. Forensic anthropology is increasingly recognized as a critical tool in such scenarios due to its ability to analyze fragmented and thermally degraded skeletal remains (Eze, 2023). Through methods like trauma reconstruction, digital imaging, and DNA profiling, forensic experts can piece together evidence that may otherwise be lost in the chaotic aftermath of an explosion (Ife, 2024). However, the application of these methods is often constrained by limited local forensic infrastructure, environmental hazards, and logistical difficulties in disaster zones (Nwachukwu, 2025). This study examines the efficacy of forensic anthropology in identifying casualties from illegal refinery explosions, focusing on methodological adaptations and practical challenges. It will review case studies, analyze laboratory data, and discuss strategies for integrating modern forensic technologies to ensure timely and accurate victim identification.

Statement of the problem
The identification of casualties from illegal refinery explosions in Okrika is severely hampered by high-temperature exposure, skeletal fragmentation, and environmental contamination (Eze, 2023; Ife, 2024). Limited forensic infrastructure and resource constraints further delay accurate identification, impeding legal investigations and disaster response efforts (Nwachukwu, 2025). These challenges result in prolonged uncertainty for affected families and a backlog in forensic processing. This study aims to address these issues by evaluating current forensic approaches and proposing improvements to enhance casualty identification and support more effective disaster management.

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess current forensic techniques for explosion-related casualty identification.

  • To identify challenges that hinder accurate forensic analysis in Okrika.

  • To propose methodological improvements for enhanced victim identification.

Research questions:

  • What forensic methods are currently used in explosion casualty investigations?

  • What challenges impede the effective identification of remains?

  • How can forensic techniques be optimized for disaster scenarios?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Modern forensic imaging significantly improves casualty identification.

  • H2: Environmental factors negatively impact forensic analysis in explosion cases.

  • H3: Strategic improvements in resource allocation will enhance identification accuracy.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the urgent need to improve forensic identification in the wake of illegal refinery explosions. Enhanced forensic methodologies will lead to faster victim identification, more efficient disaster management, and improved legal outcomes. The findings are expected to guide policy reforms and bolster forensic capacity, ultimately providing closure for affected families in Okrika.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Illegal Refinery Explosions: Unlawful explosions occurring in unregulated refining activities.

  • Casualties: Victims of a disaster or explosion.

  • Trauma Reconstruction: The forensic process of piecing together injury patterns to determine cause of death.
